Getting Started with Essential Oils

almond oil (web)

It seems everyone is either using essential oils or selling them or both.  There are so many oils and so many possible applications, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choices!

If you’re just getting started, consider Beeyoutiful Almond Oil.  This natural oil, 100% Pure & Natural prunus amygdalus dulcis, is extracted from almonds and is a great carrier oil.

Almond oil can also be used directly on the skin as a moisturizer or a massage oil.  Many essential oils can cause irritation if used directly on the skin.  They can be used safely when added to a carrier or base oil, such as almond oil.

Many of our favorite essential oil recipes use almond oil as the carrier oil.  Here’s my personal favorite.  This is our family’s fever treatment now–so much safer than over-the-counter medications!

Fever Relief
Add 3 drops of lemongrass oil to 1 tsp. of almond oil.
Apply to temples, wrists, bottoms of feet.

While you’re on your way to adding to your supply of essential oils, you can use almond oil directly on the skin as a moisturizer or a massage oil.  It is a great cuticle repairer, and it can also be used to remove make-up from skin.

lavender oil

Once you’ve begun with almond, add another great oil–lavender!

Lavender is a great massage oil.  Lavender’s anti-inflammatory properties help to relax and relieve sore, tense muscles.  Massage several drops of lavender oil into your feet.  You can also mix a few drops of lavender with almond oil for an overall body massage.

For a soothing soak, combine 4-5 drops of lavender oil with a tablespoon of olive or coconut oil and add to a warm bath.

Suffering from insomnia?  A couple of drops of lavender oil on your pillow will often bring on a restful sleep.  You might also use lavender oil in a diffuser beside your bed.

Lavender also has anti-fungal properties.  Apply a few drops to toenail fungus or athlete’s foot once or twice daily.  Within days, the lavender begins to break down the cell wall of the fungus and prevents new growth.  If the skin becomes dry from this treatment, add a few drops of almond oil to moisturize.

Lavender promotes quick regeneration of skin cells, so burns and wounds heal more rapidly when treated with lavender oil.

For regular use, even when you have no physical or emotional complaints, use lavender oil as a perfume by dabbing it on your pulse points.  This is far preferable to synthetic fragrances which can soak in and harm your body.

Beeyoutiful’s pure lavender essential oil is steam-distilled from the lavender plant.  Although it is considered safe to use internally as well as undiluted on skin and in bath water, it’s always best to test for skin allergy or sensitivity first.  Apply a drop diluted with a bit of almond oil to the inside of your elbow.  If there is no reaction after 10 minutes, you are probably not hypersensitive to lavender.

Almond and lavender are a good combination for getting started, but we’ve only scratched the surface!  Click here to learn more about Beeyoutiful essential oils and to start building your own collection!

The Water Cure

IMG_4890[1]I’m back with another glass of water and another excerpt from the very inspiring book, You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty!

Today, I’d like to tell you about Water Cure which is explained in chapter 12 of the book.  The previous chapters discuss dehydration, thirst perceptions, and the effect of dehydration on every system of the body.  Here are just a few of the facts Dr. Batmanghelidj discusses before his explanation of the Water Cure.

From chapter 1:  “The various signals or symptoms produced during severe and lasting dehydration have been interpreted by doctors as various disease conditions of unknown origin.  The signal, however, is actually for water shortage, and the local damage is because of water shortage.”

From chapter 2:  “When the human body is dehydrated, it redistributes and regulates the amount of available water.  Within the body, alarms signal to show that areas in question are in short supply…  The available water is rationed and used where needed.”

Chapter 3 provides a list of 46 reasons why your body needs water every day.  Here are two of them:  “Water is the main lubricant in the join spaces and helps prevent arthritis and back pain.”  “To lose weight, water is the best way to go…  You will not eat excessively when you feel hungry but are in fact only thirsty for water.”

From chapter 4:  “The early-pregnancy morning sickness of a pregnant woman is a most meaningful thirst signal.  In fact, it is the very first sign of dehydration of the mother and fetus together.”

In chapter 5, Dr. Batmanghelidj suggests conditions that represent indicators of dehydration.  These include asthma, allergies, hypertension, constipation, type II diabetes, and autoimmune diseases.

The following chapters explore these conditions as well as others and explain why dehydration is so devastating to the body.

But don’t stop at devastation!

Take the Water Cure!

Dr. Batmanghelidj:

“every twenty-four hours the body recycles the equivalent of forty thousand glasses of water to maintain its normal physiological functions.  It does this every day of its life.  Within this pattern of water metabolism and its recycling process and depending on environmental conditions, the body becomes short of about six to ten glasses of water each day.  This deficit has to be supplied to the body every day…  It needs on average upwards of half its weight in ounces water per day…  glass of waterWater should be taken in eight- or sixteen-ounce portions spaced throughout the day.  In the same way you don’t let your car run out of gas before you fill the tank, the body must not be allowed to become dehydrated before you drink water.”

So, how much do you weigh?  120 pounds?  200 pounds?  Divide that number by 2 and determine to drink that many ounces of water today and the next day and the day after that…  I’ll share some other suggestions in my next post.

drinking waterA little over a year ago, I came across these pictures on facebook.  I already knew that I needed to drink more water, and these pictures gave me the extra encouragement I needed.  Since then, I’ve been faithfully drinking lots of water every day (half my body weight in ounces).  I can’t say that I’ve noticed a change in my appearance as this lady did, but I sure have noticed a difference in the way I feel.

I recently came across a book on a library display.  It’s called You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty!  by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj.  Dr. Batmanghelidj has done extensive clinical and scientific research in dehydration and disease.  I’ve read the first chapter and skimmed most of the rest of the book, and my mind is blown!

I’ll give you a sample of what I’m reading.  This is from the first chapter…

“The body can suffer from deep dehydration without showing a dry mouth.  Dehydration produces severe symptoms, even to the point of causing life-threatening crises…  Dry mouth is one of the very last indicators of dehydration of the body.  By the time dry mouth becomes an indicator of water shortage, many delicate functions of the body have been shut down and prepared for deletion.  This is exactly how the aging process is established–through a loss of enzyme functions.”

Here are just a few of the topics addressed in this book:  asthma, allergies, blood pressure, diabetes, constipation, heartburn, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, hot flashes, kidney stones.  I’m sure I’ll be sharing more of what I’m reading.  For now, I’m going to pour myself a glass of water!

Paraben-Free Moisturizer

We introduced our Paraben-Free Moisturizer a little over a year ago, and it has become one of our most requested products!  It’s made from a paraben-free lotion base, Beeyoutiful’s Almond Essential Oil, and Vitamin E oil.

Parabens are petroleum-based preservatives.  They’re commonly used in cosmetics and personal care items.  Read a shampoo bottle and you’ll probably find parabens in the ingredient list:  methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben to name a few.  Thanks to parabens, your shampoo, lotion and deodorant will last for years.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that the parabens are entering your body when you use these products.  Research has shown that your body may absorb as much as five pounds of cosmetic chemicals each year.

Check your facial cream and moisturizer labels.  See any parabens there?  When the moisturizer is absorbed into your skin, so are the parabens.  When the parabens enter your bloodstream, they mimic estrogen, sometimes causing hormonal imbalance.  Parabens also commonly cause allergic reactions and contact dermatitis.

We are delighted to offer you an alternative to lotions and moisturizers with chemical preservatives.

Here’s what our friends and customers have told us about our Paraben-Free Moisturizer

I have very sensitive skin, and this moisturizer is great for me.

I’ve had dry skin on my arm for several days.  Nothing I’ve tried has helped.  This moisturizer has made a difference after just one application!

Oooh!  It feels great!

This is wonderful stuff!

Our Paraben-Free Moisturizer comes in an airless pump container, so there’s absolutely no waste–no moisturizer left in the bottle to be thrown away!  You’ll enjoy every drop of this moisturizer!  Click on any of the links in this post to purchase yours now!

Nourishing Food

One of our children had a stomach virus this week.  I wanted so much to nurse him back to health with good, nourishing food.  Our previous bug recovery staples have been Jell-O and Gatorade, and I wanted to avoid the excess sugar.  I asked friends to send me their gluten-free and sugar-free suggestions, and I was so encouraged by all the great ideas!

Here’s what we did…

First thing in the morning, I boiled a whole chicken.  That provided dinner for the family later and about half a gallon of broth which is full of natural probiotics.

As soon as the tummy violence was over, I opened a Tummy Tuneup and poured the powdery contents into a small amount of unsweetened applesauce for him.  I also added a Tummy Tuneup to a bottle of cold water which he sipped throughout the morning.

When he felt like eating, I served him a bowl of white rice with butter and sea salt added.  Other snacks throughout the day were Rice Chex (this was the only sugar he ate all day!), gluten-free crackers, buttered toast on Udi’s gluten-free bread, and chicken broth with sea salt added.

For dinner last night, he had rice with butter, a cup of chicken broth, and a banana.  Before going to bed, he ate a small bowl of unsweetened applesauce with a Tummy Tuneup added.

I’m so thankful to have kept him nourished with good food yesterday!  While he rested, I rediscovered a treasure on my bookshelf:  Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon.

Nourishing Traditions, Sally Fallon

I’m excited about the things I’m learning from this book!  This will help me feed my family good, nourishing food every day–not just when they’re recovering from a stomach virus.  I’ll be blogging about my discoveries very soon.  If you already have Nourishing Traditions, what’s your favorite recipe?  Did you learn something you want to share?  I would love to hear from you!

Beeyoutiful Essential Oils Behind the Scenes

How Beeyoutiful's Essential Oils Are Made

It seems everybody has heard of essential oils these days, but a lot of people are still unfamiliar with Beeyoutiful essential oils.  I’d love to introduce you to these fantastic products!

All of Beeyoutiful’s Essential Oils are produced utilizing only steam distillation or cold pressing with no additional ingredients added.  Most of the oils are extracted using steam, while the citrus oils (such as Orange and Lemon) are released through pressure.  If you’re interested in all the details of steam distillation and cold pressing, visit and click on Blog in the top header bar.

Beeyoutiful uses plants from many sources.  Beeyoutiful’s essential oil labels always include the Latin scientific name of the plant, so you can know exactly what’s in each bottle.  This is important since not all varieties of the same plant have the same therapeutic properties.  The final quality of an essential oil involves many factors, so Beeyoutiful begins at a high level by weeding out things like old stale plant parts, and insisting on choosing the specific plant species used.

Beeyoutiful analyzes many components of every oil, including Specific Gravity, Refractive Index, Optical Rotation, Flash Point, Infrared Absorption (as published in FCC), Solubility, Taste/Odor, Color/Appearance, Heavy Metals and Predominant Active Chemical Components.  Beeyoutiful employs state-of-the-art analytical equipment that allows highly specialized analyses, such as Gas Chromatography and Infrared Spectrometry.  As a general guideline, Beeyoutiful follows the specifications used by the Essential Oils and Flavor Industry and published in The Essential Oils by Guenther, as well as Fenaroli’s Handbook of Flavor Ingredients.

Once an oil passes all of Beeyoutiful’s quality checks, it’s bottled, labeled, and ready for use in your home.  Beeyoutiful essential oils are 100% pure, unadulterated, uncontaminated, and undiluted.  Every batch is sample tested to make sure that this is so, before bottling, during bottling, and after bottling.  I invite you to read about these oils and to add some to your family’s home health supplies!  You, too, can Beeyoutify your pantry:)

My Beeyoutiful Pantry

The title of this post is misleading.  My kitchen pantry is anything but beautiful.  Well, my daughter did just recently organize it for me, so it looks a lot better than it did.  Still, it’s not beautiful.  But it IS Beeyoutiful!

My Beeyoutiful Pantry ~ Beeyoutiful products in my pantry

I guess you can tell from this photo that this family loves Beeyoutiful!

It all started with SuperMom.  That was our first purchase from Beeyoutiful.  Now there are SuperMom tablets and Vcaps for the ladies and SuperDad for the guys.   (In case you’re looking for it, there’s no SuperDad in the picture.  We’re out except for the ones in the keepers on the top right shelf!)   Other favorites are Cod Liver Oil, Cranberry Power CleanseRed Raspberry Leaves, and, of course, Tummy Tuneup.  And we can’t forget the Miracle and all the awesome essential oils.  Do you see anything else here you recognize?

You know, we’d have a lot more room in the pantry if we didn’t use so many Beeyoutiful products!  But that is completely out of the question!

Thanks, Beeyoutiful, for beeyoutifying my pantry!  :)
